Why You Can Literally Hand Over A Mini Christmas Gift

The idea of getting a foot or hand casting of your baby’s tiny features is a great idea, but there are more options than you might think.

While a cast can look wonderful on the mantelpiece or in some other pride-of-place location at home, there is also the option of a miniaturised version that can be worn as an item of jewellery, such as a signature piece in a necklace.

This has some great attributes; it can be worn by either mum or dad, and it can also be with you at all times, so you can be reminded of your little one even when you are not with them.

You may wonder just how a miniature can made with accuracy. After all, the original requires using a mould like clay to capture the shape of a hand or foot, which can then be cast. But as you can’t magically make a real foot or hand smaller, producing a version of smaller proportions is harder.

However, it is worth noting that when making bronze artwork, the original mould from which it is made is often a different size to the final piece. In the case of very large bronze works, such as statues, the original mould may actually be much smaller.

What this shows is that while some casts may be life-size, often the artist has to take measurements of the different dimensions of the mould to make it larger or smaller in proportion in order to create a final piece in the proportionate dimensions, so it can scale up or down accurately.

Once that new mould is in place, the new cast can be poured, providing a miniature version.

Such an item can then be a delightful Christmas or birthday present, providing its wearer with a constant reminder of their little one whenever they put it on and wherever they go.
