What Happens During a Baby Hand & Foot Casting Appointment at Home?

baby foot casting process close up

If you’re considering baby casting, it’s completely natural to wonder what the process involves, especially with a newborn or young baby.

Our sessions are designed to feel calm, gentle, and unhurried, captured in the comfort of your own home. Everything is guided carefully, so you can simply relax and enjoy the moment.

Arrival and Preparation

When I arrive, I’ll bring everything needed for the casting. We usually set up in a kitchen or somewhere with a little workspace, ideally away from carpets or rugs.

There’s no rush. We take a few minutes to settle, chat through the process, and make sure your baby is comfortable. If your baby is feeding or sleeping, that’s absolutely perfect.

The Casting Moment

The casting itself is very quick and safe.

Your baby’s hand or foot is placed into a soft, skin-safe casting material for around two minutes. Many babies sleep through this part, or are happily feeding or soothed with a dummy.

I guide you throughout, so you’ll always know exactly what’s happening. The aim is to keep everything as calm and relaxed as possible.

After the Casting

Once we’ve taken the casts, the session is complete.

Back at the studio, I create a detailed wax version of your baby’s hand or foot. This stage captures every tiny detail, from soft wrinkles to delicate fingernails.

I’ll often share images of this stage with you, so you can see the piece taking shape.

Creating the Final Piece

Your casts are then carefully refined and finished by hand.

Whether you choose bronze, glass, silver, or framed stone plaster, each piece is created with patience and attention to detail. The process takes time, but it ensures a beautiful, lasting result.

A Calm and Considered Experience

Every session is led with care, patience, and a gentle approach.

The aim is not just to create a beautiful piece, but to make the experience itself feel calm and reassuring, something you can look back on as part of your baby’s early story.

If you’d like to begin your own casting, you can start your casting here.
